A Bridge to career progression for Selena

When Selena Massey started on the Bridge Programme at Gower College Swansea, she was undecided about where her future career path lay.

Now, two and a half years later, Selena is employed as a brake and suspension technician with Kwik Fit, and she fully credits the Bridge Programme with helping her gain her focus and confidence.

“I started the programme willing to give everything a go,” says Selena. “I knew that practical subjects would be my strongest point and I was able to access support with my maths and English so that now I have qualifications in those subjects.”

Selena started applying for local apprenticeship programmes and was successful in her application to Kwik Fit. She is looking forward to having a full time, well-paying job at the end of her apprenticeship period.

“I got the job I wanted and I wouldn’t change it for the world,” she adds. “I had an amazing experience in college – making some amazing friends and memories that I’ll never forget. Without the Bridge Programme I wouldn’t be the person I am today and I wouldn’t be where I am. It really helped me to develop my skills, better prepare for interviews and apply for jobs.”

“I am so proud of what Selena has achieved,” says project coordinator Caryn Morgan. “She is so motivated and was really focused on getting an apprenticeship in the field of engineering - specifically motor vehicle. To see that she has achieved her goal is really fantastic for the entire Bridge team – well done Selena!”

The Bridge Programme targets young people who are at high risk of becoming NEET (not in employment, education or training) and aims to engage them in a range of opportunities that could lead them into work or study.

For two consecutive years, the programme has been shortlisted for a TES FE Award.
