Celebrating 'Welsh Week'

Updated 15/03/2017

We had a week full of events to celebrate Welshness in the college around our Patron Saint day - St David’s Day.

The common rooms on every campus were decorated all over with daffodils, yellow and green balloons, Welsh flags and daffodil and leek bunting from pillar to pillar. Of course there was plenty of free Welsh cakes for students as well!

On the Gorseinon campus we had a melodic acoustic performance from one of our former Llwyn y Bryn students, Sian Richards, to kick off the celebrations on 1 March. Then the roof was raised by local professional folk group Calan and their energetic and ‘full of life’ performance. We should also give praise to Helen, Gloria and Kim in the Gorseinon refectory for wearing their outfits of Welsh lady hats and rugby shirts so well.

There were big celebrations in the Broadway Hair and Beauty Centre. They organised a Mannequin Challenge on a Welsh theme with rugby balls, daffodils and a red dragon. There was also a Welsh food festival in reception so that staff, students and clients got a feeling of Welshness on the day.

The Vanilla Pod organised a Welsh food theme night and catering lecturer Stephen Williams prepared some delicious Welsh cakes on the Tycoch campus.

“Thank you very much to all the staff who supported the day and had such fun in doing so,” says Anna Davies, the college’s Bilingual Champion. “A special thanks to Rhian Noble for organising everything in Broadway which was an excellent example of good practice in a learning area. I would also like to thank the Llwyn y Bryn library staff for all their hard work encouraging students to compete in our St David’s Day competitions and for decorating the library and raising awareness of the day amongst students.”

The aim of our St David’s Day competition was getting the students to express ‘what Wales means to me’ and the winners were:

1st: Alba Fernandez Hernandez – ESOL Entry 2
2nd: Jasmine Guise-Ellis – Level 3 Photography Diploma
3rd: Muhesin Aslam – ESOL Entry 3
4th: Marilyn Jones Level 2 Art and Design class
=5th: Rhian Pardoe Level 3b, Level 2b and Level 1 Childcare / Natalia Bruno Level 1 Childcare classes
