College wins tennis award

Gower College Swansea has won an award from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Wales region.

The college’s Sport department was one of three finalists in the Education category at the 2015 Tennis Wales Awards, which was held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama on 20 February. This was in recognition of the wide range of tennis activities the college organises throughout the year as part of the wider curriculum.

In addition to hosting three annual tennis festivals per campus, Gower College Swansea also encourages all students to enjoy ‘timed tennis’ sessions using smaller courts, shorter rackets and sponge balls suitable for all levels, and organises special tennis sessions for Independent Living Skills students.

“As an established further education partner of the LTA, we aim to encourage all students to take part in tennis, whatever their level of ability,” says Curriculum Leader Marc O’Kelly. “This helps to keep them fit and active and is also a great introduction to something they can go on to pursue as a sport or hobby. The LTA help us greatly towards achieving this aim by providing support in the form of coaching, funding and equipment.”
