GCS students scoop Gold and Silver at Skills Show

Two Gower College Swansea students brought home medals from the recent Find a Future Skills Show at the Birmingham NEC.

ILS student Kayleigh Lewis was awarded Gold in the ‘Inclusive Cooking Skills’ competition, where she was required to prepare and present filled wrap-style sandwiches and flat breads while demonstrating the correct preparation, hygiene and safety skills throughout.

“Kayleigh didn’t seem fazed at all leading up to the competition and took it all in her stride,” says Learning Area Manager, Mark Clement.

“This is the second competition in which Kayleigh has claimed a Gold prize while representing the college so we are ecstatic!” adds Curriculum Leader, Michelle Williams.

“Seeing Kayleigh remain calm and composed in such a high pressure situation was an amazing privilege,” says Lisa Scally, her lecturer and mentor leading up to the competition.

Meanwhile, Hospitality student Ryan Kenyon took a Silver medal in the ‘Restaurant Service’ competition and now goes through to Squad UK, with the aim of securing a place to represent his country on the international stage.

Over three days, Ryan was scrutinised by the judges while completing a number of tasks including: preparing Steak Diane ‘Gueridon’ style; portioning a Chateaubriand at the table; carving a side of smoked salmon and presenting four portions for service; serving a champagne afternoon tea and serving a table of four, including silver service.

The college’s Food Service Instructor Nicola Rees was absolutely delighted with the result.

“Ryan has represented Gower College Swansea in four major competitions over the past two years and should be very proud of his achievements,” she said. “These wonderful memories will remain with him throughout his career.”
