Talented young people from across Wales have been recognised as world-class experts at the WorldSkills International competition in Russia.

The event is the world’s largest skills competition and took place across four days in Kazan with young people from more than 63 counties battling it out to be awarded a medal in their chosen skill.

Scholarship success for International student

Scholarship success for International student

Jarrett Zhang is celebrating after being awarded a £180,000 scholarship from the Rio Tinto mining company to study Geology at Imperial College London.

Jarrett, who achieved two A* grades and one A in his recent A Level exams, will receive £45,000 per year, over a four-year period, to cover tuition fees and living expenses. The Rio Tinto scholarship was awarded to just two students in 2019 so this is a fantastic achievement.

Jarrett also celebrated sporting success this year when he won the 2019 Welsh Colleges table tennis championships.

An amazing 60% of our International A Level students achieved A* and A grades in their recent exams.

Over 90% of these students have since been accepted to study at prestigious Russell Group universities, including Cambridge.

Haolin Wu (from China) achieved four A* grades and will now study Land Economy at Christ College, Cambridge.

Yuzhe Zhang (China) has received a £180k scholarship to study Geology at Imperial College, London.

A Level student heads to American University

Among the 1000-plus students about to progress to higher education from Gower College Swansea is Elli Rees, who has won a place at a prestigious American university.

Elli, who attended Ysgol Gyfun y Strade before studying A Levels in Maths, English Literature, Government and Politics, and Religious Studies at the Gorseinon Campus, will now read for a Liberal Arts degree at St John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland.

Shanghai calling for electronics students

Four Gower College Swansea students have made it through to the WorldSkills UK national finals for Industrial Electronics, which take place at the NEC in November

Rhys Watts, Liam Hughes, Ben Lewis and Nathan Evans are all on Electronic Engineering courses at the Tycoch Campus.

“The entire teaching team is delighted and extremely proud of these students,” says Curriculum Leader Steve Williams. “The group heading to Birmingham in November is comprised of eight learners so, for half of that team to be Gower College Swansea students, is an incredible achievement.”

Gower College Swansea exam results 2019

Students at Gower College Swansea are celebrating an overall A Level pass rate of 99%, with 1205 separate exam entries.

Of these passes, 35% were at grades A*-A, 61% were at A*-B and 82% were at A*-C.

The overall pass rate at AS Level was 92%, with 67% of those passes being grades A - C and 44% being grades A - B. There were 2447 separate exam entries for AS.

The College’s vocational results are also strong again this year with a 100% pass rate across Level 3 Extended Diplomas. 57% of these students achieved at least one Distinction.

We cannot issue results without your ID so it's really important to remember this

A Gower College Swansea Foundation Degree Fashion and Textile Design student was recently shortlisted in the prestigious idott competition.

Sheeza Ayub’s work was one of over 1000 individual entries submitted to the competition from art and design students based in the UK and across Europe.
