Your library is an important part of college life. We invite you to visit the library (both its physical and virtual space), to explore the wealth of resources and support we provide. Experienced and friendly staff provide support through your research journey, whilst ensuring that your library provides a relaxed learning environment.

Library questions

Am I able to come and use the library?

No, all campuses are now closed and neither students nor staff are currently allowed to access any of these sites. We will inform you if there are any changes to this.

What do I do with my borrowed books when I don’t need them anymore?

Keep them safe at home until the college reopens.

Will I be charged a fine if they are overdue?

No, we don’t charge fines.

What should I do about the books I currently have out on loan?

Please keep any books which you currently have out on loan. This includes any books which you may have from other libraries. We have suspended all overdues and recalls and as mentioned, we do not fine.

I came across an eBook in the Library Search results and it is asking me for a Username and Password. What is it?

When you want to access any electronic resource, your username and password is the same as the one you use to log in to a PC.

What can a Library Advisor help me with?

Within your libraries, experienced and qualified staff are there to help you with your research. You can do this by booking a session using the Book a Librarian service.

Will I be able to collect any books which I have reserved?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to collect any books which you have reserved as all library sites are now closed.

How do I renew my library books?

You don’t need to do this. All items on loan have been renewed until the end of June 2020.

Can I still use electronic resources?

Yes, our electronic resources including e-books, journals, magazines and GCS TV are available via Library Online in Moodle. Login to your Moodle account, select ‘Library Online’ and then select ‘e-resources 24/7.’

How do I access e-books?

Login to Moodle and select ‘Library Online,’ then select ‘Library Search.’ This will open a new tab with our library search engine. Type in the name of the book you are looking for and under the media option to the right of the search bar, select ‘e-books’ in the drop down. This will bring up all e-book titles which we have available.

You may be taken to a new page which will ask for your username and password, this is your Student ID and password which you use to log on at college. Don’t use the email version as this does not work, only use your Student ID number. Once accessed, you have the option to either download or read online. Enjoy!!

How can I contact the library if I need to speak to someone?

We are available every day on Facebook (Gower College Swansea Library Services), Twitter (GCSLibrary) and Instagram (gowercollege_library). We are also available via email at library@gcs.ac.uk.

Please be aware we are only available during standard library opening hours, Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 4.30 and Friday 8.30am to 4pm. We aim to answer all queries but please be patient when waiting for a response.

Can I speak to someone over the phone?

As all our campuses are closed, the only form of contact are the ones mentioned above.

Can I still get my work proofread?

Yes, just use the ‘Ask a Librarian’ service as found in Moodle.

Can I take a laptop out?

No, not at present, unless you have already been issued one.

Who do I contact if I have issues logging in to Moodle/Office 365?

Please try using the advice given on the Staff/Student Portal. If this does not work for you then Your online Library Assistant will do their best to help, otherwise we will refer you to IT services.

There are books I need which are not available as an e-book, what can you do?

Unfortunately, not all items are available in a digital format. If there is an item which is urgent for your studies, please contact either your tutor or us at library@gcs.ac.uk.
