From FE to HE progression - UWTSD PhD student Ashley Pullen is on a path to success

Ashley, aged 26, will graduate next summer with an impressive portfolio of skills and qualifications in a specialist area – Non Destructive Testing (NDT). UWTSD has become a global centre for academic teaching, research and development in the field of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). NDT is considered essential for the safety of aircraft, off-shore oil installations, gas pipelines, railroads, chemical plant, power stations, civil engineering structures and a wide range of industrial products.

How green is my valley?

International Students got together to take in the great views of the Garw Valley during their half term visit to Bryngarw Country Park.

They enjoyed exploring the woodland paths and having fun in the play area - especially going down its gigantic slide.

Afterwards the group spent time at  McArthurGlen Shopping Centre, grabbing a bite to eat and stocking up on their favourite goods.

Once again the sun shone brightly and some of the students said they couldn’t believe just how green the Welsh countryside is.

The students were celebrating achievement in subjects including accountancy, teaching, engineering, childcare, hair and beauty, sport, housing and management.

Acting brothers return with audition tips

Two former Performing Arts students have returned to Gower College Swansea to share some words of wisdom.

Brothers Amukelani (Kel) and Anthony Matsena visited the Gorseinon Campus to meet with current student and discuss their experiences of auditioning and competing for places at specialist drama colleges.

Kel has just embarked on his final year at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School while Anthony, a recent graduate of the London Contemporary Dance School, is a Young Associate at Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

Shortlisted Sally is a science career role model at Tata Steel

Sally Hughes is on course for a rewarding career with Tata Steel in Port Talbot and hopes to inspire other young women to follow a science career pathway.

The only female in a group of technical apprentices recruited by the company in Port Talbot in September, 2016, she says it has not been easy to be successful within a male dominated environment.

However, the 19-year-old from Port Talbot is determined to reach her full potential by embracing all opportunities available to her.

College celebrates the Diversity Fayre 2018

Staff and students at Gower College Swansea have enjoyed another vibrant and successful Diversity Fayre.

Among the entertainment on offer this year was African drumming, Brazilian martial arts, Bollywood Indian dance and street dance. Live music was also provided by students from the Llwyn y Bryn and Gorseinon Campuses.

Community partners in attendance included EYST, BAWSO, Chinese in Wales Association and the African Community Centre.

Brand new student facility launched at Gorseinon Campus

As a result of a £2m investment by Gower College Swansea, students at the Gorseinon Campus will soon be able to take a break between classes in a brand new social space – the Coffee Hut.

The Gorseinon Coffee Hut, which has been officially opened by Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns MP, is a first floor extension to the existing refectory block.

Featuring a Costa Coffee retail outlet, it is a light and airy space for students to relax together and have a bite to eat.

Students enjoy textiles workshop

AS and A Level Textiles students from Gower College Swansea have enjoyed a weaving workshop with Llio James, a Welsh practitioner with a strong interest in developing the relationship between hand weaving and the traditional woollen industry within Wales.

Exploring the feeling of belonging to ‘country and culture,’ colour plays an important role in her design process as she examines proportion, scale and geometric shapes when hand weaving bespoke cloth.
