Sir Terry backs unique partnership tackling digital skills gap in region

Sir Terry Matthews has given his backing to a new partnership set up to tackle the digital skills gap in the Swansea Bay City Region.

Speaking about the launch of Digital Skills Training, a public/private venture between Gower College Swansea and IT training and development company Stratum Worldwide, Sir Terry said he was pleased to see the college responding proactively to the economic and commercial opportunities presented by expanding digital networks and the development of applications and services that exploit them.

Botanical garden inspire students and staff

Art and Design students at the Llwyn y Bryn campus recently visited the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthenshire to gather research and inspiration for their induction and first assignment based on ‘Natural Form’.

Armed with sketchbooks, pencils, paints and cameras, the students and staff visually recorded what they saw and these will be used for further development in specific design areas such as posters, logos, fine art prints, textiles, collage and sculpture.

Gower College Swansea’s Enterprise Education Manager Sue Poole has been shortlisted for a major award which recognises her expertise and enthusiastic approach to the national enterprise agenda.

Organised by the team behind the Great British Entrepreneur Awards and the publishers of Fresh Business Thinking, the Entrepreneur Wales Awards is the only awards ceremony to acknowledge the hard work and inspiring stories of Welsh entrepreneurs and businesses in Wales.

Important information on the collection of certificates (BTEC, City & Guilds etc)

CERTIFICATES: BTEC / CITY & GUILDS / EAL / VTCT / CACHE / NCFE / IFS

Certificates for many awarding bodies will be available shortly for collection from the college (see the end of this notice for specific details). A card will be posted to you detailing the collection times and informing you of the collection processes. The cards will read as follows:

NB: All students who receive a postcard notifying that their certificates are ready for collection MUST bring the card in to claim the certificate.

The College is now the majority shareholder of Track Training Limited - a long established and successful ‘Wales Fast Growth 50’ company with leading clients in England and Wales.

College welcomes innovative industry partnership

Students following Gower College Swansea’s Digital Technology programme are set to benefit from sponsorship and possible employment opportunities after the department linked up with an innovative global company.

Based in Swansea, Energist Ltd was founded in 1999 and quickly became a market leader in Pulsed Light (IPL) systems based around its unique VPL variable pulsed light technology. The company has since expanded rapidly, growing a worldwide distribution base and significant sales in South East Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Star chef visits Tycoch kitchens

Students on their very first day of a Hospitality and Catering course had a huge surprise when they were treated to a practical master class from Slice chef – and Great British Menu star – Adam Bannister.

Adam, a former student at the Tycoch campus, prepared pan fried pigeon with noodles followed by tarte tatin with caramel ice cream.

He was recently selected as the chef to represent Wales in the finals of the popular BBC show.

Bright futures for Engineering Technology 'class of 2015'

Gower College Swansea’s Engineering Technology department (Tycoch) has celebrated its most successful Level 3 BTEC cohort to date.

From the graduating class of 2015, seven are heading to top universities around the UK including Swansea, Manchester, Lancashire and Bristol, to study degrees in Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, and Computer Aided Engineering, Architecture and Robotics.

A further 14 students have secured apprenticeships with established companies including Tata Steel, 3M, Quartzelec, Wall Colmonoy, Lyte Ladders and A.I.R Precision.

AS and A Level post result services

Students who have received their AS and A Level results today may now want to apply for access to their scripts or request a re-mark of one of their examination papers.

The Examinations Office has forms available and payments will need to be made when the forms are brought in.

For re-marks of a script, a cheque is required in advance. This cheque is held safe until the result of the re-mark is made. If your unit mark or grade increases then the awarding body makes no charge and your cheque is returned to you.
