Performing Arts students join Festival of Remembrance

The City of Swansea Branch Royal British Legion has invited students from our BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts to be part of the Festival of Remembrance on 8 November at the newly refurbished Brangwyn Hall.

The students presented a devised piece inspired by their research into WW1 last November. They visited the battlefields of the Somme and attended the last post service at the Menin Gate in Ypres. It was a special trip for staff and students and has been much talked about since.

Dylan Thomas Prize-shortlisted writers visit college

A Level English students at the Gorseinon campus were delighted this week to meet up with two Dylan Thomas Prize-shortlisted writers.

"It was fantastic to welcome both Eimear McBride and Kseniya Melnik to the college where they spent an hour with the students talking about their work and the writing process," says lecturer Sally Llewellyn.

The Dylan Thomas Prize is a prestigious award open to published writers in the English language under the age of thirty. There is a £30,000 prize for the winner who will be announced on 6 November.

Geography students visit the Jurassic Coast

A Level Geography students recently enjoyed a two day residential field visit to the Jurassic Coast in Dorset.

The World Heritage Site boasts some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the British Isles and forms the basis of many of the case studies needed for the A2 examination.

The trip included two nights in a cosy youth hostel at Swanage whilst studying the awe-inspiring landscapes of Chesil Beach, Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Poole Harbour Spit and Bournemouth.

Special graduation event for college's HE students

Around 80 Higher Education students from Gower College Swansea recently attended a graduation event at the National Waterfront Museum.

The students were celebrating achievement in subjects as diverse as accountancy, engineering, leadership and management, sports massage therapies, hair and beauty management, childcare, and health and social care services.

Seventeen students at Gower College Swansea have been successful in their applications for sports scholarships, following in the footsteps of alumni such as Leigh Halfpenny, Justin Tipuric and Jazz Carlin.

Dance students head to NYC

A group of A Level Dance students from Gower College Swansea are heading to New York this November.

They will spend a morning watching a rehearsal of the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre (AAADT) and enjoying a tour of the facilities. The groundbreaking work of the AAADT, which was formed in 1958 and has gone on to perform worldwide for an estimated 25 million people, is a specific area of study on their course.

Maths students make the most of STEP session

Students taking Further Maths at Gower College Swansea enjoyed a stimulating morning recently when they attended a STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) master-class, organised by the college in conjunction with the Further Maths Support Programme Wales, using facilities provided at Swansea University.

These STEP II and STEP III master-classes are open to all Year 13 pupils who are studying Maths and Further Maths and two people had travelled from North Wales to benefit from the programme!

Students prepare for a 'day of dance'

Dance students at Gower College Swansea have an exciting opportunity to work with the National Dance Company Wales (NDCW) during the half term holidays.

A Day of Dance gives students a chance to work with professional contemporary dancers on developing technique and learning repertoire. The NDCW has toured nationally and internationally and has a long standing connection with both Gower College Swansea and the County Youth Dance Company (CYDC), which is hosted at the Gorseinon campus.

Workshop to inspire writers

Aspiring writers at Gower College Swansea had a chance this week to meet with professionals already working in the industry.

The Write 2 Aspire workshop was organised by the college’s Enterprise team. Guests included South Wales Evening Post editor Jonathan Roberts, writer Paul Durden, playwright Ioan Hefin, novelist Cal Smyth and ex-student Mollie Kneath who is now studying English in London.
