Course Overview
From September 2021 the following requirements will apply:
Where a childcare setting provides for children between the ages of 0-12 years, the person in charge should hold both:
- A Level 3 childcare qualification and a
- Level 3 playwork qualification or a smaller award as recognised on the SkillsActive List.

Entry Requirements
Minimum age of learner is 18 years.
Learners wishing to undertake the Level 3 Award in Transition to Playwork (from Early Years) must have achieved a suitable Level 3 early years qualification such as the Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education.
Course Delivery
This qualification is based on the National Occupational Standards for Playwork and will develop the knowledge needed when working in playwork settings. It covers the theories and principles of play and playwork, risk management and how to support the needs and rights of children to create diverse play environments.
Learners must achieve two mandatory units totalling 12 credits.
- Unit 1 - Understand the theories underpinning playwork practice
- Unit 2 - Understand aspects of playwork practice
Progression Opportunities
Suitable employment could include: hospital playwork practitioner; holiday club practitioner; after school club practitioner; adventure centre practitioner
Additional Information
Learners will attend college for 15 weeks on a Thursday 6pm-8pm.
