Music Sequencing - an introduction

Course Overview

The aim of this course is for learners to be able to produce an arranged music sequence.

A music sequencer is one of the most important pieces of equipment that is used in our home studios. It’s where we record, edit and process a lot of the electronic drum, bass, and synth parts created for our productions. There are lots of different types of these devices available, most of them are software-based.

You will learn how to operate computer based applications and understand the basic functions of a software sequencer. You will be expected to produce an arrangement demonstrating the use of multi-tracking using simple arranging techniques.

Using a modern digital audio workstation students will have the opportunity to develop their own musical ideas. Key topics covered include:
•    Setting up the software.
•    Connections and routing.
•    Recording and editing MIDI.
•    Using plug-ins as instruments and effects.
•    Using samples.
•    Quantization.
•    Good practice in file and project management.

Emphasis will be placed on the creative use of the software.
