Overview

The Level 4 apprenticeship in Translation Practice is designed to provide learners with an opportunity to develop their practice as a trainee translator, to be able to progress towards a career within their chosen translation field and towards qualifications that will enable them to gain professional status. Individuals who undertake this qualification could be in a junior translator role.

The Level 4 apprenticeship is suitable for those who:

  • Are 18 years old or over
  • Have an A Level at grade C or above in Welsh (first language)
  • Are working in a translating role
  • Possess strong Welsh and English language skills
  • Wish to gain recognition for their skills through an accredited qualification
  • Wish to develop their practice as a translator

Key information

Learners must be aged 18 years old or over, and working in a translating role for more than 16 hours per week.

The delivery of the apprenticeship can be flexible, as it is available through a blended approach, face-to-face through workplace visits and/or remotely through Teams or Zoom. Specific delivery models and framework requirements can be discussed and agreed with employers before the commencement of the apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship includes both competence and knowledge units where learners must demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding by presenting evidence and written or verbal responses to the mandatory units listed below:

  • Ethics in translation practice
  • Principles of language use and variation 
  • Develop and maintain translation skills
  • Manage translation commissions 
  • Translate written texts
  • Enhancing own performance as a translator

This qualification is available in English or Welsh.

Learners will also need to complete:

  • Level 2 Essential Communication Skills
  • Level 2 Essential Application of Number Skills
  • Level 2 Essential Digital Literacy Skills
  • Work Based Learning Induction
  • Completed Apprenticeship

Guided learning hours are 185 hours with a total qualification of 340 hours.
