Building Services Engineering (Plumbing and Heating) - Apprenticeship
Overview
This course has been developed to allow those in work-based learning to demonstrate and enhance their occupational knowledge, skills and understanding within their Building Servies Engineering trade.
It is aimed at learners who have either achieved the Level 2 Foundation in Construction and the Built Environment or will be completing the Level 2 Core in Construction and Building Services Engineering learning and assessments while in their apprenticeship. This qualification will enable learners to go on to study other Level 3 Building Services Engineering courses relevant to their choice of trade.
The Level 2 Core qualification will give learners an overview of the Construction Industry alongside trade specific theory content and plumbing practical training.
The Level 3 BSE in Plumbing & Heating will focus on theory units which cover design, installation, maintenance and repair on complex domestic systems. Learners will also complete practical training within a workshop setting and will gather suitable practical evidence with their employer.
Key information
The apprenticeship route is suitable for learners who are:
- Aged 16+ currently working in the trade area
- Have passed all relevant sector specific entry assessment (where appropriate)
- Have achieved one or more of the following (or recognised equivalent):
- Foundation in Construction and the Built Environment qualification at Level 2
- Progression in Building Services Engineering qualification at Level 2*
- Welsh Baccalaureate National Diploma
- GCSE grade A*-C in each of the following: - a communication subject, maths and either a science or technical-based subject (e.g. Design & Technology, Electronics)
- GCSE grade A*-C in WJEC GCSE Built Environment
- Level 2 Access to Building Services Engineering qualification and/or equivalent qualifications.
09:00 – 19:30 1 day a week
A mix of course work, practical assessments, and online exams.
Assessment structure
To achieve this qualification, learners must complete:
- Year 1 - Core in Construction & BSE
- Year 2 - Building Services Engineering (Level 3) – Plumbing and Heating (Intermediate)
- Year 3 - Building Services Engineering (Level 3) – Plumbing and Heating (Advanced).
In Year 4 –
Learners will be required to complete one of the optional routes from:
1. Fossil Fuel – Natural Gas (this aligns to IGEM IG1 and ACS assessment standards)
2. Environmental Technologies (this aligns to MCS requirements)
Learners that have not completed the L2 Foundation in Construction & Building Services Engineering qualification will begin the course in Year 1 and complete the L2 Core in Construction and BSE. Learners that have completed the Foundation in Construction & BSE will begin the course on Year 2 and start the L3 BSE in Plumbing & Heating.
