Students enjoy felt workshop

Fine Art students from Gower College Swansea have enjoyed a felt workshop with Vivian Rhule, a felt and print artist from Swansea who draws her inspiration mainly from local landscapes and nature.

The workshop was an opportunity for students to create pieces of felt work to include in their portfolios.

The students made one large piece of felt in a variety of colours that will support and form new ideas for future projects. They also had an invaluable opportunity to experience and visually engage with the work of a professional working in today’s Welsh felt industry.

The girls did good!

Second year International students have donated original artwork for greeting cards to raise money for Children in Need.

Maggie and Iris, who both study fine art and textiles and Trista, a photography student, supplied the fabulous images.

Sale of the cards generated almost £100.

In addition, the International Office organised a stall selling Pudsey merchandise and fortune cookies and managed to tot up just over £200.

International students aiming high

Seven International A Level students have applied to study at either Cambridge or Oxford University in September 2019.

All of these students achieved at least three A grades in their AS exams and have already received offers from world renowned universities such as Imperial College London, UCL and London School of Economics.

All students completed their Oxbridge aptitude assessments over half term and are now waiting to see if they will be given an interview.

We wish all College students the very best of luck with their Oxbridge applications.

GCS students take Gold, Silver and Bronze at WorldSkills!

Gower College Swansea students performed exceptionally well at the recent WorldSkills UK LIVE National Finals at Birmingham’s NEC.

Electronic Engineering student Jamie Skyrme took home a Gold Medal in the Industrial Electronics category after undertaking a challenging set of competition tasks including fault finding, electronic design, programming and prototyping.

College signs educational partnership agreement

International Manager Kieran Keogh has signed an educational partnership agreement with Britlink, a subsidiary of the large Singapore based Dimensions Education Group, to deliver vocational qualifications throughout Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

In partnership with Britlink, Gower College Swansea will offer Level 2 and 3 qualifications in a business related discipline from early 2019.

Students enjoy ceramics workshop

Fine Art students from Gower College Swansea have enjoyed a clay workshop with Eluned Glyn, a Welsh ceramic designer whose inspiration comes from the classic forms of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The workshop was an opportunity for students to create sculptures by coiling and slabbing clay and creating shapes by molding with slip.

The students made a range of clay pieces that can support and form new ideas for future projects. They also had an invaluable opportunity to experience and visually engage with the work of a professional working in today’s ceramic industry.

From FE to HE progression - UWTSD PhD student Ashley Pullen is on a path to success

Ashley, aged 26, will graduate next summer with an impressive portfolio of skills and qualifications in a specialist area – Non Destructive Testing (NDT). UWTSD has become a global centre for academic teaching, research and development in the field of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). NDT is considered essential for the safety of aircraft, off-shore oil installations, gas pipelines, railroads, chemical plant, power stations, civil engineering structures and a wide range of industrial products.

How green is my valley?

International Students got together to take in the great views of the Garw Valley during their half term visit to Bryngarw Country Park.

They enjoyed exploring the woodland paths and having fun in the play area - especially going down its gigantic slide.

Afterwards the group spent time at  McArthurGlen Shopping Centre, grabbing a bite to eat and stocking up on their favourite goods.

Once again the sun shone brightly and some of the students said they couldn’t believe just how green the Welsh countryside is.
