ESOL Student of the Year: Nashwan Damar
When Nashwan came to the UK in 2007 he couldn’t communicate in English or even spell his name. He knew that he had to better his life so he enrolled on a full time course at Gower College Swansea. He has now studied for three years in full time ESOL classes and is extremely worthy of this award. His strong qualities of grit, determination and a positive, highly motivated approach to learning generate a real enthusiasm in his classes.

Using the latest technology to learn
ABE and ESOL learners took part in the Regional Essential Skills project to develop literacy and digital literacy skills. They really enjoyed using iPads at the National Waterfront Museum to learn about Swansea's history by following a QR code trail.
"I came to the UK from Chechnya not speaking a word of English. Enrolling on this course means I can communicate with and understand the people around me.
Improving my English helps me with socializing, employment opportunities and even when I travel to other countries."
Idris Baggashov, L2 ESOL
Excellent ESOL Outcomes
Learners achieved excellent results this year. Pauline Gleed achieved 100% attendance. Gonzalo Silvestre not only passed his exams, he achieved a qualification in creative writing, is Learner of the Year and is now a lecturer who will be delivering Spanish classes in Tycoch!
Some of our International learners are moving on to Access programmes and the Foundation Diploma Art and Design – well done!
Learn Welsh too!
The ESOL and ABE teams have got to grips with some basic Welsh language skills and pronunciation activities thanks to Sgiliaith Cymru and Welsh Champion Anna Davies.
