A Welsh first for Rory

A Gower College Swansea student has become the first from a Welsh educational institution to be shortlisted in the Royal Economic Society’s Young Economist of the Year competition.

Rory Daniels, who is studying A Levels at the Gorseinon campus and is a student governor, made the final shortlist of just 20 taken from an initial 2000 entries.

“Students from 30 different countries enter this competition and the majority of those shortlisted in the past have been from prestigious schools such as Eton, Westminster and Harrow, so it is fantastic to see a student from Gower College Swansea take their place among them,” says Bruce Fellowes, Curriculum Leader for Economics.

In the spring term of each year, any student studying a UK A Level or International Baccalaureate (IB) qualification is invited to write an essay calling on key elements of their studies, examples from the world around them and imaginative discussion.

Rory’s work was judged by a panel of experts including Professor Sir Charles Bean (London School of Economics , formerly of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee and RES Past President), Stephanie Flanders (JP Morgan) and Professor Jonathan Haskel (Imperial College, London).

The Young Economist of the Year competition is organised by The Royal Economic Society and Tutor2u.
