Mock interviews strengthen skills for progression

Levels 2 and 3 Sport and Public Services students from Gower College Swansea's Tycoch campus recently attended mock interview sessions with local employers at an event organised by Lucy Turtle, the college's Enterprise Officer, and Gareth Price from Career Wales.

“This event was intended to help over 100 students gain employment or to succeed in higher education interviews," says Lucy. "It also addressed criteria set out in the ‘Career Planning' unit of the curriculum."

Among the employers in attendance were Tata Steel, Wolfstone Translation, HSBC, Tesco, Swansea University and the Armed Forces, who all gave structured feedback to the students after their interviews were complete.

“The quality of the students' CVs and interview techniques were outstanding," adds Jamie Ryan, representing the Armed Forces. “I am keen to follow up these interviews with a couple of group sessions for Public Services students regarding recruitment into the Army.”

Rebecca Mugford, Public Services lecturer, was also delighted with the outcome of the day.

“The feedback I had from the students has been very positive," she said. "In general, the group feel they have improved their interview skills and, having received feedback from the employers, they can work on and improve the weaker areas identified. I would like to thank all the employers for giving up their free time and I hope we can organise another event in the near future”.
