Work-related opportunities for IT students

Updated 07/12/2017

IT students at Gower College Swansea will soon have an opportunity to combine their academic studies with realistic workplace training, thanks to a new partnership with global employability programme Galaxias Tech.

The Enhanced IT Programme is open to Level 3 ICT students who are not planning on progressing to university and are instead focusing on honing their skills in a practical setting.

The classes will run initially on the College’s Tycoch/Hill House campus before transferring to IndyCube in Wind Street.

“The programme will enable students to develop those all-important, work-related skills as they will be treated like employees for the duration of this course,” says Curriculum Leader Bruce Fellowes. “The Enhanced IT programme bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills and we are delighted to link up with Galaxias Tech to deliver this city centre training.”

Thirteen second year students are currently on the programme and have already started working on their first projects.

“There are some golden opportunities ahead for them,” adds Bruce. “In total, the students will undertake 25 days’ work related experience with Galaxias Tech including a whole week in December. There is also future potential for apprenticeships – all great news for the local economy and for them personally as they start their careers in the IT industry.”

Galaxias Tech responds to the demands of employers, industry and educators and is dedicated to preparing young adults for work.
