Laboratory and Science Technicians Apprenticeship (L3)

Course Overview

You will complete the following qualifications as part of the apprenticeship framework:

  • Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science (1 day/week), or
  • Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Applied Science (2 days/week), plus
     
  • NVQ Level 3 Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science is equivalent to one A Level and comprises of four units. It's designed for learners who want to learn more about the sector alongside other areas of study with a view to progressing to a HE course (not necessarily in applied science.) It can be taken alongside other BTEC qualifications or A Levels.

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Applied Science is equivalent to 1.5 A Level and comprises of six units. It is designed either as a one year, full time programme or as part of a two year, full time programme for learners who wish to study another area alongside it. It taken as part of a programme that includes other BTEC qualifications or A Levels, it supports progression to higher education.

  • Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science I
  • Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills
  • Optional unit(s)
  • You will also study essential skills in Application of Number, Communication and Digital Literacy.

Entry Requirements

Minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above. These must include maths, English and at least one science subject.

Progression Opportunities

Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Life Science and Related Science Industries.

Further study at university in a related subject.
