This two year course examines a variety of current and topical issues in the health and social care sector.  

The qualification enables you to develop and demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding within the context of health and social care services. 

Course Objectives: 

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of professional responsibilities, roles and accountabilities of health and social care workers within the sector 
  • Learn about legislation, national policies, codes of conduct and professional practice that support health and social care workers in their roles 
  • You will build on your knowledge and understanding of working in the health and social care sector through classroom teaching and through mandatory sector engagement 
  • Understand the importance of positive relationships, trust, effective communication. 

Course Outcomes:  

  • Suitable foundation of health and social care through a range of higher education courses, or apprenticeships. 
  • Understand the values that underpin health and social care skills and qualities and apply them to a range of health and social care settings, such as day centres, care homes and additional needs services. 

Key information

5 GCSEs A*-C grade including Mathematics, English Language and Science.

Over 5 days a week 9:00 – 16:30 


Over 2 years, students will complete 2 external exams and 7 non-examined assessments. 

Grading Criteria: 

Full Qualification is equivalent to 3 A levels with grades from A*A*A* - EEE achievable. 

Progression to Higher Education is possible with the full qualification, that could include: 

  • Health 
  • Social care 
  • Early years 
  • Speech and language therapy 
  • Psychology and Counselling 
  • Midwifery 
  • Occupational Therapy 
  • Education.

We also have students who have progressed on to our Higher Education courses in Gower College Swansea such as Foundation Degrees in Early Childhood and Foundation Degrees in Community Work. 

Students will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) application at the start of the course. Cost is approximately £40.
