In this course, students will learn the fundamental concepts of media studies, including representation, audience, industry and media language. Through individual projects students will gain practical experience in using software such as Photoshop to create film posters and new magazine brands.  

Course Objectives: 

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key concepts of media studies  
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of media studies to analyse media products 
  • Develop media products for an intended audience that reflect key concepts of media studies.

Course Outcomes: 

  • Understand the key concepts of media studies  
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of key concepts 
  • Research and develop your own media products applying knowledge and understanding of the key concepts of media studies.

Key information

  • A minimum of seven GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English Language at grade B.

Assessment of AS media studies:

  • Unit 1 written exam (60%) – Investigating the media  
  • Unit 2: coursework (40%) – Creating a media production  

Assessment of A2 media studies:

  • Unit 3:  written exam (60%) – Media in the global age 
  • Unit 4:   coursework (40%) – Creating a cross media production  

Grading Criteria:

  • Exams: 60% 
  • Coursework: 40% 

While studying A level Media Studies you will learn skills such as communication, critical thinking and research. You will also develop your creative abilities and gain experience using digital software such as Photoshop.  These skills can help prepare you for many jobs in various industries, such as advertising, marketing, journalism and business.
