This course helps you get ready for your next step in college or training.
On this course you will complete two qualifications at the same time:
- Certificate in Skills for Further Study Level 1
- Essential Skills Wales (Communication) Level 1
These qualifications will help you improve study skills, confidence, reading, writing, speaking and listening.

This course is for learners who:
- Want to move to a Level 2 course
- Want to improve English communication skills
- Want more confidence in learning
- Need help before higher level study.
It is helpful for learners interested in:
- Health and Social Care
- Early Years.

Key information
To join this course, you must have:
- Essential Skills Wales (ESW) Entry 3 – Communication
- A positive attitude to learning
- An interview with a tutor.
If you do not have ESW Entry 3, your tutor may suggest another course first.
34 weeks. 3 hours per week.
How is the course assessed?
There are no exams.
You will collect your work in a portfolio (a folder that shows your work).
Your work may include:
- Short writing tasks
- Speaking and listening activities
- Practical tasks
- Group work
- Tutor feedback.
Your tutor will help you during the course.
After successfully completing this course, you may move to:
- Level 2 college courses
- Level 2 Health and Social Care
- Level 2 Early Years.
