Karly is a double award winner

A former Access student from Gower College Swansea has been officially named as a runner-up in the annual Keith Fletcher Memorial Prize ceremony.

Karly Jenkins (second left), who studied Access to Social Welfare at the College before beginning her social work degree at Swansea University, will attend a special presentation event at The Palace of Westminster on 24 April.

It will be the second award given to Karly this year, as she was also the recent recipient of an Agored Cymru Access Learner of the Year Award, in the Outstanding Commitment to Study category.

Mother and daughter team Deb and Rebecca Harry are among the latest beneficiaries of Gower College Swansea’s highly successful employability programme, Better Jobs, Better Futures.

Rebecca was studying A Levels and a Level 3 AAT course at the College when she first visited Better Jobs, Better Futures with the aim of becoming an accountant.

Former student signs to Cardiff City

A former Gowerton School pupil and Gower College Swansea student has signed to Cardiff City.

Danny Williams, who studied Level 3 Football, Coaching and Performance (Diploma in Sport) at the College as well as being a star member of its Football Academy, has signed a 2.5 year professional contract with the Premier League club.

College in the running for two Apprenticeship Awards

Gower College Swansea is in the running for more awards after being named as a national finalist in the AAC Apprenticeship Awards 2019.

More than 350 entries were submitted from UK colleges, training providers and employers for these prestigious awards, which are organised by FE Week and the Association of Education and Learning Providers.

Gower College Swansea - the only Welsh finalist - has been shortlisted in two categories, the first of which is Health and Science Apprenticeship Provider of the Year.

Cissy returns to the stage for Chinese New Year event

Cissy, a second year International student, took centre stage again this year at the Chinese New Year celebrations held at the National Waterfront Museum.

The event is organised by the Chinese in Wales Association and has grown steadily in popularity since its launch.

Cissy charmed visitors by playing the erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument.

Ex-student achieves first cap for Wales at the Six Nations

An ex-student from Gower College Swansea has got her first Welsh rugby cap against France in the Six Nations Women’s tournament.

Alex Callender, from Carmarthen, was surprised to come on so early in the game, on February 2, in the opening match of the series out in Montpellier.

The 18-year-old only started playing rugby two years ago, for Llanelli Wanderers, after some encouragement from friends. She currently plays her regional rugby with the Scarlets.

Alex said: “The dream then started to play for Wales…it’s an amazing feeling.”

Apprentice of the Year talks success with secondary school pupils

A 19-year-old from Port Talbot is encouraging pupils from her former secondary school to consider apprenticeships as a chosen career path.

Sally Hughes attended Ysgol Cwm Brombil in Port Talbot before attending Neath college to do AS-Levels in biology, chemistry and psychology. After completing the year, Sally enrolled onto a BTEC Level 3 Applied Science at Gower College Swansea.  

Ahead of Apprenticeship Week Wales 2019, Sally has returned to her former school to talk to the current learners about her successful experience as an apprentice.

International students celebrating top university offers

Our International students are currently holding offers from some of the UK’s top universities, including 20 of the 24 Russell Group Universities.

“This is further evidence of the outstanding standard of teaching and learning at Gower College Swansea,” says International Manager Kieran Keogh.

“Over the last three years, more than 90% of our International students have progressed to Russell Group Universities including Oxbridge, and - going on this year’s university offers - that trend looks set to continue.”
