Overview

This level 3 course is designed to progress into the Electronic Industry Apprenticeship Programme. It forms part of the Welsh apprenticeship framework used to train apprentices in the field of electronics.  

In this course, students will learn the fundamental concepts of electronics including Autodesk Fusion, analogue electronics, digital electronics, robotics, computers, networking, audio visual, PLC and bespoke projects.  

Through hands-on projects and exercises, students will gain practical experience using the very latest electronic systems and solving real-industry standard problems.  

To enhance the learning experience after an initial two-month training programme students will start a one day a week work placement in an electronics company. This is designed to give the student and the employer an opportunity to develop a strong working relationship with the possibility of an apprenticeship within the company.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the principles of electronic systems and their applications
  • Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills on electronic systems
  • Design and install electronic systems
  • Experience regular weekly work experience.

Course Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to explain the fundamental concepts of electronic systems and their applications
  • Students will be able to design electronic systems  
  • Students will be able to install electronic systems. 

Key information

Four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Four days a week in College and one day a week in work.

Assessment:

  • Multiple choice exams
  • Practical assignments
  • Report writing. 

Grading criteria:

  • Exams: 40%
  • Assignments: 50%
  • Report writing: 10%.

Successful completion of the programme can lead to a full-time apprenticeship. This sector is incredibly diverse leading to apprenticeships in:

The course can lead to a rewarding career in the Electronic industry.

Several students have represented both Wales and the UK in skills competitions. These competitions allow students to become the very best versions of themselves. The Electronics team are proud of our achievements with learners in this space. Learners consistently win Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in such competitions.  

Students have gone on to represent the College in the International skills Olympics via the World Skills International pathway.

Students that have taken up apprenticeship opportunities have forged excellent careers within the sector.
