Overview

This apprenticeship is designed for learners seeking a qualification in the gas installation and maintenance industry. It is available to school leavers as well as experienced workers new to the industry who want to become gas installation and maintenance engineers in the domestic sector.

This apprenticeship will enable learners to apply for registration with the Gas Safe Register in the categories of CCN1 and CENWAT.

The apprenticeship will also provide the learners with Water Regulations and Stored/Unvented Hot Water, allowing them to work on cold and hot water systems that are governed by building control.

The course will deliver all the skills necessary to build a successful career within the gas and heating industry.

  • Apply health and Safety Legislation and working practices to your work
  • Understanding scientific principles in gas utilisation
  • Understanding combustion properties of gas
  • Understanding buildings, services and structures
  • Gas safety
  • Install and remove gas pipework in domestic settings
  • Carryout gas tightness testing
  • Specific core installation and maintenance
  • Install, service, repair and remove gas water heating and wet central heating appliances
  • Diagnose and rectify electrical faults on domestic gas appliances
  • Electrical work and the control of domestic heating systems
  • Design and size systems for new installations or conversions in a domestic setting
  • Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Water Byelaws in the UK
  • The installation, commissioning and safety aspects of hot water systems for domestic use in accordance with UK building regulations

Key information

Entry Requirements

Learners must be employed by a gas safe registered company, which will allow learners to gain the relevant experience in the domestic gas sector and complete their portfolio of work. Learners must also employed for more than 16 hours per week and based in Wales, to be eligible for apprenticeship funding.

It is recommend that learners have three C grades or above in English, Maths and one other subject.

Course Delivery

Learners will be allocated a dedicated tutor/assessor, who will work closely with both the learners and employer to ensure the level and units selected are suited to their individual role and organisational priorities. The tutor/assessor will meet with the learners every 4-6 weeks to assess progress and set objectives for the next period. 

The learners will be expected to attend one classroom teaching session per week throughout the duration of the qualification. This teaching will consist of both practical and theoretical training relevant to the apprenticeship.

Learners will also be required to complete essential skills lessons, which will include application of number and communication. 

Additional Information

To successfully complete the apprenticeship, learners will be expected to complete an on-site portfolio of work. There will be a mixture of on-site assessment in the workplace as well as practical assessments completed in a workshop.

The apprenticeship will also include written assessments throughout the programme, and each unit studied will be assessed by an online theory examination.
