Music A Level
Overview
This course will nurture your creativity and deepen your understanding of music as both an art form and a practical discipline. Through a balance of performing, composing and appraising, you will develop your skills as a musician while exploring a wide range of styles, genres and historical contexts. You will study set works in detail, learn how music is constructed, and apply these techniques in your own compositions. There are opportunities to perform both solo and in groups. Analytical listening and discussion will help you build confidence, communication skills and musical insight, while allowing you to develop your own areas of interest and specialism.

Key information
- Seven GCSEs grade C or above, including English Language. Mathematics is also desirable
- Grade B or above in GCSE Music or grade 5 Theory (ABRSM)
- The ability to read music notation is essential, as is a willingness to actively participate in practical activities, group performances, and individual practice.
This course will be delivered through a combination of classroom sessions, rehearsals, and individual practice. Assessment methods include written examinations, practical performances, and composition portfolios. Grading criteria will evaluate your understanding of music theory, your technical proficiency in performance, your composition skills, and your ability to critically analyse musical works.
Your areas of study will include Religious Choral Music (1730-1890) and Musical Theatre. The current music tutor at Gower College Swansea was awarded a ‘Pearson Teacher of the Year Award in 2021’ and they will provide regular feedback and guidance and will support your progress and development throughout the course.
Successful completion of A Level Music opens up a range of progression opportunities. You can pursue higher education in music-related fields such as musicology, composition, performance, or music production. Many students choose to continue their studies at university or conservatories to further enhance their musical expertise.
A Level Music also provides a solid foundation for careers in the music industry, including performance, teaching, music journalism, music therapy, and arts administration. Additionally, the transferable skills acquired during this course, such as teamwork, communication, and critical thinking, are highly valued in a wide range of professions outside of the music sector.
Our A Level Music course offers various opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular music groups, including a choir, orchestra, and jazz band. These groups provide a collaborative and enriching environment for students to further develop their musical skills, gain performance experience, and form lasting friendships with fellow music enthusiasts.
