Apprentice earns top award

A Gower College Swansea Electronics apprentice has scooped a prestigious award from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Thomas Eynon, an apprentice with Zeta Alarms Systems, has claimed an IET Local Network Award which aims to ‘reward excellence’ in students.

“Since completing his technical certificate at the college and joining Zeta, Tom has not looked back,” says Curriculum Leader Steve Williams. “He is now fully immersed in his modern apprenticeship, putting together an excellent portfolio of evidence.”

During his time at Gower College Swansea, Tom really stood out. He engaged in many entrepreneurial events, the highlight being representing the college in the Engineering Education Scheme Wales finals held at the Celtic Manor where Tom worked tirelessly to perfect an electronic solution for a repair company. The outcome that Tom and his team created was so successful that it has been adopted by the company and is having a significant positive impact on their company repair processes.

Very active during school visits, Tom gave presentations to pupils where he talked about the exciting world of engineering and the employment opportunities within the sector. In addition, he led a student delegation to Stuttgart and supported the college in its drive to engage students with engineering during the successful Saturday Club program.

“Whilst at Zeta Alarms, Tom helps support our work-related experience program by training our current students in the technical area of the company operations,” adds Steve. “This has proven to be very successful, with Tom helping to train seven students who have now managed to secure work themselves within Zeta Alarms - so he is passing his skills and experience on to the next generation of engineers.”

“Tom has a vast technical knowledge and a fantastic work ethic which has helped him grow within our company, recently earning a promotion to Test Engineer,” says Zeta’s General Manager Matthew Rogers. “He is a real joy to work with and, at 21, we see him as a future leader within GLT, Tom is a credit to his family and Gower College Swansea. Nobody deserves this award more."
