Competition success for Catering and Hospitality students

Updated 05/12/2017

Two Catering and Hospitality students from Gower College Swansea have earned places in the Worldskills UK Squad team, which could see them representing their country at the Worldskills World Final in Russia in 2019.

Level 3 student Collette Gorvett was recently ‘Highly Commended’ in the Restaurant Services competition at the Worldskills National Finals at Birmingham’s NEC.

The technically challenging competition required Collette to serve a Champagne afternoon tea, carve smoked salmon, decant wine, present and carve a rack of lamb, make mocktails and classic cocktails, identify spirits by sight and aroma, match food and wine, prepare scampi flambé, prepare fruit at the table, set the restaurant, prepare hot beverages and provide excellent customer service throughout.

“Collette is a star student - following her progression from Ysgol Gymraeg Bryntawe, she has completed Level 1 and 2 qualifications while competing at various local and regional Welsh competitions,” says mentor Nicola Rees, who is also the instructor at the College’s Vanilla Pod training restaurant. “We are all delighted with the progress that Collette has made and wish her well for her preparation for Russia.”

Alongside Collette in the UK Squad is former Gower College Swansea student Ryan Kenyon who is now employed at the prestigious Cliveden House in Surrey. Ryan also has previous competition experience, securing a Silver medal in the UK finals in 2015 and getting down to the final two in UK Squad training for Abu Dhabi 2017.

“This is the third year running that we had competitors at the Skills Show final, doing Team Wales proud,” adds Learning Area Manager Mark Clement. “Both Ryan and Collette are ambitious, talented and hard-working students – real role models for their peer groups.”
