'Home away from home' for Gower College Swansea's international students

Gower College Swansea’s international students, who are aged between 16 and 18, come from countries all over the world. This year the College have students from Cambodia, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.
Homestay is more than living as a guest in someone’s home, it’s essential for students to feel that they are one of the family by taking part in their day-to-day routines, such as having dinner with the family. This not only helps them feel more at home, it’s also an excellent way for students to experience British culture and improve their English language skills, which is vitally important for their studies and success at College.
The College aims to provide a good match between the student and their host family. They introduce them to each other before they arrive in the country so they can discuss their likes, dislikes and interests.
Homestay families provide a vital link between the student, the College and their families at home and assist them in gaining their independence and social skills needed for further studies and life at university in the UK.
Homestay hosts
Sue and Keith Dinnage and Sue Morris share their experience of being a Homestay host to two students from Vietnam and China, while Nguyen Nghi shares her experience of the homestay experience.

“We have had the pleasure of being Homestay hosts for several years and have found it to be a very rewarding experience. We enjoy sharing knowledge of our culture and country whilst also learning about our guests’ culture and home country, making it very humbling for us all. The College provides excellent support to the students and to the Homestay hosts with multiple points of contact.”

As a Homestay host I have found it very rewarding. All the students I have had have been from Asian countries and it is interesting learning about the different cultures. I would recommend anyone to become a host not only for the benefit of the student but also for yourself. It is nice to give a home to young people from overseas who may be away from home for the first time.”

Could you become a host family for our international students?
We still need hosts for our September/October cohort!
We are looking for welcoming and friendly homestay hosts to offer accommodation and meals for international students aged 16 to 18 in the SA2, SA3 and SA4 postal code areas. Hosts can be paid up to £150 per week.
Breakfast and evening meals to be provided, with lunch on the weekends and holiday periods.
We are also looking for Homestay Hosts for short-term programmes, such as Winter/Summer School and teacher training.
