Lancet editor visits Gorseinon students

Students planning a career in medicine/psychiatry got the chance to meet one of the leading figures in the field recently, when the founding editor of The Lancet Psychiatry visited Gower College Swansea.

Niall Boyce met students at the Gorseinon campus to talk about emerging areas of mental health research.

"Mental health research is in a very exciting phase right now, including some world-class work going on in Wales,” says Niall. “I hope some of the students at Gower College Swansea will consider careers in this area."

Niall attended Bishop Gore and Olchfa Comprehensive Schools in Swansea before training in medicine at Oxford University and gaining a PhD in Physiology from King’s College, London.

He joined The Lancet as a Senior Editor in 2010 before becoming the founding editor of The Lancet Psychiatry in 2013. His specialist interests include suicide research, trauma, old age psychiatry, and social and transcultural aspects of mental health.

“It was such a privilege to welcome Niall to the college,” says Stewart McConnell, lecturer in Biology and Medical Sciences. “What a fantastic opportunity for our students to meet a leading figure in their area of interest and to have the opportunity to ask him questions – I’m sure they will have all benefitted hugely from this experience.”
