Costumes on display on stage at URDD Eisteddfod

National success for students in the Urdd

Our students had particular success at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Llandovery last week. Over 60 students in all competed in various stage and homework competitions. Gower College Swansea was the most successful further education college in Wales this year.

In addition to this, a special award went to two students; the Art, Design and Technology Medal to Lara Rees for the best piece of work in the under 19 category from all art, design and technology competitions at the eisteddfod. The scholarship for the most promising soloist went to Katherine Foxall. Lara and Katherine received their medals in a special ceremony in the pavilion on the Eisteddfod Maes.

"Lara is studying on the Fine Art course with Gill Day-Thomas and Nigel Williams on Gorseinon Campus, and the rest of the students are either on the Fine Art or Photography course with Vivienne Ventress, Graphics with Gary Hope, Childcare with Mari Tierney and Rhian Evans, Textiles with Paige McCann Gray, Science with Ffion Roberts, Welsh Second Language with Rhian Lloyd and Mari Jones and Music with Jon Rogers" said Welsh Language Manager, Anna Davies.

"Many thanks to them for encouraging the students to compete. I would like to say a big congratulations to all the students above, who have been successful in a highly respected competition. We are very, very proud of them."

This year's Urdd Eisteddfod was held in Llandovery during the May half term. All winners are invited to receive their certificate and medal on Saturday 2nd June, and their work can be seen in the Art exhibition throughout the week.
