Overview

The Software Developer Level 4 qualification develops advanced knowledge and practical skills in software design, testing, improvement and coding. It also includes professional practice and system security, which are essential to the role of a software developer.

Learners will gain the competence required to work as IT professionals in roles such as software developer, web developer, database administrator and network planner.

Key information

This qualification is suitable for individuals who are currently working in or aspiring to work in software development roles.

It is designed for learners who have prior experience or qualifications in IT and wish to advance their skills to a higher level.

Learners will be allocated a dedicated Tutor/Assessor who will work closely with both the learners and employer to ensure the level selected is suited to individual roles and prior skills and knowledge. Delivery is primarily remote via Microsoft Teams, with workplace visits and face-to-face sessions available if required.

Dates and times for the training will be agreed between the learner and employer to ensure minimum disruption to the organisation.

Optional units

  • Software design and development
  • Testing and quality assurance
  • System security and maintenance
  • Professional practice in IT.

Assessment

To successfully complete the qualification, learners will create a portfolio of evidence containing documentation, code samples, project reports and screenshots of work carried out. The portfolio will be reviewed during the regular one-to-one meetings with Tutors/Assessors and used for assessment purposes.

Gower College Swansea utilizes Smart Assessor, an online assessment management tool enabling provider, learner and employer to effectively track learner progress.
