Overview

This unit is intended to give learners a broad introduction to develop the practical skills required to perform metal inert gas (MIG/MAG) welding in the flat and horizontal/vertical positions. Learners will produce welds and visually assess that they are fit for purpose against the requirements of the weld procedure (WPS) provided within the unit’s internal assessment. Students will also learn the fundamental underpinning knowledge relevant to the metal inert gas welding.

Key information

Some prior engineering/welding experience would be beneficial but not mandatory.

Evidence of the learner’s achievement will be placed in their portfolio. The main pieces of evidence for their portfolio will include: • knowledge assessment • practical assessment

There is a shortage of engineers in the industry so this course could be the introduction into a career in the welding sector. There would also be possibilities to take a level two qualification in this discipline.

Students will need to provide their own steel toe capped boots and flame retardant overalls.
