This two year course is taught by specialist lecturers making use of very well equipped laboratories and teaching rooms. 

In the second year of study, learners have the option to follow either the Analytical and Forensic Science or Biomedical Science pathway, dependent upon their chosen progression route. Areas of study over the two years include:

  • Principles and applications of science*
  • Practical scientific procedures and techniques
  • Science investigation skills*
  • Laboratory techniques and their application
  • Investigative project
  • Principles and applications of science II*
  • Contemporary issues in science*
  • Human regulation and reproduction
  • Genetics and genetic engineering
  • Application of organic chemistry
  • Practical chemical analysis.

*Externally assessed 

Optional units include:  

  • Forensic evidence collection and analysis
  • Forensic traffic collision investigation.


  • Microbiology and microbiological techniques 
  • Biological molecules and metabolic pathways.

Key information

Five GCSEs at grade C including English and Mathematics, with Science (desirable) or the BTEC Level 2 First Diploma in Applied Science (with a Distinction/Merit profile).

Assessment is through coursework and external exams, based on practical work and academic research. Both internal and external unit assessments are graded as pass, merit or distinction. Grades for each unit are based on the lowest achieved grade.

This is an ideal course for progression to higher education. Past students have gone on to study degrees in medical genetics, biology, paramedic training, forensic science, dental technology, criminology and biochemistry.

Students will also study the Welsh Bacc alongside the main course which will boost UCAS points for university entry.
