Course Overview

This two year course builds on the knowledge and skills needed for working with children and young people from birth to age 19. This is a competency based qualification requiring you to achieve 700 hours in a work placement.

Areas of study include:

  • Principles and values
  • Safeguarding
  • Health and wellbeing, learning and development
  • Professional practice
  • Ilness and infection
  • Speech, language and communications skills
  • Positive behaviour.

Learners will also complete the Core Qualification alongside this course and the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate.

Entry Requirements

Level 2 childcare qualification or five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language. You must complete a DBS prior to enrolling on the course. Cost is approximately £40

Course Delivery

A large part of the assessment takes place in your work placement, but you are also required to compile a substantial portfolio of evidence from both placement and college.

Progression Opportunities

Staying at Gower College Swansea, you could progress on to the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood 

Students could pursue a degree course in primary teaching, early years, social inclusion, psychology or sociology. Some students also consider an Access programme that enables them to consider careers in children’s nursing or social work.

Careers as a foundation phase practitioner, day care crèche practitioner, flying start practitioner, sessional day care assistant practitioner, nanny or holiday rep.
