Engineering (L3 Extended Diploma)

Course Overview

This is a two year course based at Gorseinon Campus which has been designed to give you the knowledge and skills needed to meet the needs of modern mechanical and electrical engineering industries. The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is a technical and professional qualification which is recognised by employers for the skill it provides in a specific subject area and is accepted by universities as equivalent to three A Levels.

Entry Requirements

You will need five GCSEs at grade C or above including mathematics, science (preferably grade B) and English language.

Course Delivery

You will study seventeen units over two years, the following are some of the units studied:

  • Health & Safety
  • Engineering Design
  • Mathematics
  • Project Management
  • Engineering Drawing
  • Mechanical Principles & Applications
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Engineering Materials
  • Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems
  • Computer Aided manufacture. 

    Other units offered will include: Further Engineering Mathematics and a broad range of engineering units to support a variety of career paths and university courses.

    The course is assessed through a varied range of methods. These will include: written assignments, group and individual presentations, practical observation, report writing, presentations and oral questioning. The assessments take place throughout the duration of the course and you will be able to monitor your assessments and progress at all stages.

Progression Opportunities

You can progress on to a wide range of degree programmes or degree apprenticeships leading to careers including mechanical, electrical, electronic and civil engineering. Many of our past learners have achieved Chartered Engineer status and gained employment with prestigious employers such as Formula One, British Airways and GE Aviation.

Staying at Gower College Swansea you could choose either the HND in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
