College celebrates Cambridge connection

Seven students from Gower College Swansea have been offered places to study at Cambridge University this year.

They are:

Olchfa pupils enjoy art and design tasters

Pupils from Olchfa Comprehensive School attended a recent art and design taster day at the Llwyn y Bryn campus.

During the session, they were able to explore creative thought processes and discover how traditional design can be turned into commercial outcomes after being transferred onto t-shirts.

Student returns to school with advice

Gower College Swansea Music Technology student Lorna Rees recently delivered a talk to Birchgrove Comprehensive pupils as part of the new Kick Start Programme.

The aim of the event was to give the pupils an insight into what they can expect when they make the transition from school to college.

College project obtains charity status

Gower College Swansea students (past and present) joined forces with staff and friends last week to celebrate the new official charity status of the Kenya Community Education Project (KCEP).

Students selected for one-off show

Performing Arts students from Gower College Swansea have taken to the stage after being specially selected to perform at a one-off Cinelive Project.

‘What’s the Grey Matter with Gregory?’ was an immersive theatre production staged at the Taliesin on 20 January for an audience of around 100 local secondary students.

Apprentices represent college at regional heats

Two students have represented Gower College Swansea at prestigious national apprentice competitions.

Mariusz Gawarecki, who is studying towards a Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, was put forward for the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year by his lecturer Mike Morris.

“Mariusz is an exceptional student – in fact, he was our overall Engineering Student of the Year in 2015 - and was a fantastic ambassador for the college at this year’s competition, being placed second out of ten,” says Mike.

Fujitsu and Intel invest in young Swansea Talent Bank learners

Swansea students will be at the forefront of life science and health innovation after winning backing from two global tech companies.

Talent Bank, which is part of the ARCH Programme, has just secured investment from Fujitsu, in collaboration with Intel, as part of its Fujitsu Ambassador Programme.

News of the funding was announced at London Excel’s recent Betts event, the world’s largest education technology show.

Students receive audition advice

Performing Arts students at Gower College Swansea have benefited from one-to-one coaching from the Head of Acting at one of the UK’s leading conservatoires.

Ali de Souza, of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, spent the day with students at the Gorseinon campus. As well as holding group and individual audition workshops, Ali conducted a Q&A session where he spoke about the RCS acting programme, and provided general tips and hints on how to make the best of audition opportunities.

Charity single helps city's young people

A local indie band, featuring Justin Hendy from Gower College Swansea’s MIS department, teamed up recently with Swansea Young Single Homeless Project (SYSHP) to release a special limited edition Christmas single called ‘Winter Warmer’.

All proceeds from the single by Broken Fires will go to SYSHP to purchase packs of basic household items for young people starting out on their own for the first time.

Broken Fires also organised a very special show in support of the single at the Square Peg Coffee House in Sketty on 23 December.

Pop Up Cinema event a success

A group of Morriston Comprehensive pupils, working with Enterprise Officer Lucy Turtle, have organised the first ‘pop up cinema’ at the college, as part of the Kick Start Programme.

They screened two showings of A Streetcar Named Desire for A Level English students at Gorseinon. Curriculum Leader Joanna Dudley was delighted with the outcome of the event.
