ESOL students enjoy a slice of Welsh history

As part of this year’s St David’s Day celebrations, the ABE and ESOL teams organised a joint educational trip for around 80 learners to St Fagans National History Museum.

With the weather on their side, the participants were able to explore the outdoor museum in its full glory, picnicking in the grounds of the wonderful Elizabethan manor house, as well as partaking in delicious freshly baked Welsh cakes at the Derwen Bake House.

Student wins pet hospital work experience prize

A Level student Elan Daniels is set to spend a week at Swansea’s Pet Hospital after winning a national work experience competition.

Elan is studying maths, geography, chemistry and biology at Gower College Swansea and is also a part of the medical sciences and vet sciences tutorial group. She was selected as the Swansea area’s winner after entering the PDSA’s Veterinary Student Work Experience competition.

Second award for talented Science students

A talented group of Science students have scooped a second award for their work on an innovative EESW (STEM Cymru) project.

In 2014, Jamie Dougherty (as team leader), Anna Bevan, Jiaman Cheang, Alana Borthwick, Ruth Harvey, Joshua Cox and David Small worked with Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay on a project brief entitled: “find additional methods of sustainable, renewable energy generation for the Tidal Lagoon.”

Technical Theatre students head to RADA

Two Technical Theatre students from Gower College Swansea are celebrating after being accepted by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art..

Lauren Jones and Johnny Edwards, who are currently studying Level 3 Production Arts at the Gorseinon campus, will begin their Technical Theatre and Stage Management courses in London this September.

National success for art students

Gower College Swansea students have performed exceptionally well in various art, design and technology competitions at the National Urdd Eisteddfod.

Amy Spencer, Foundation Diploma Art and Design student, took First prize in the 'Fashion 19-25' category.

Bethan Dowding, also on the FD Art and Design course, took First prize in the 'Create an Artefact 19-25' category

Alice Samuel, who is taking an A Level in Fine Art, took Third prize in the 'Art under 19' category.

Scholarship success for Simon

Former Gower College Swansea Access student Simon Hussellbee has fought off stiff competition to secure a scholarship from the prestigious Gray’s Inn of London, which will enable him to complete his Bar Professional Training Course.

The Honourable Society of Gray's Inn is one of the four Inns of Court (professional associations for barristers and judges) in the capital. To be called to the Bar and practise as a barrister in England and Wales, an individual must belong to one of these Inns.

Engineering student collects manufacturing award

Gower College Swansea Engineering student Amadou Khan recently picked up an award at the prestigious EEF Future Manufacturing Awards at Cardiff City Stadium

Amadou took Bronze in the Pathway to Apprenticeship (PTA) Student of the Year category.

Amadou was a PTA student during 2013/14 and demonstrated an excellent attitude towards every aspect of the programme, including his work placement at AAH Pharmaceuticals. Upon completion of the PTA, he progressed onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.

Cynnal Cymru – The Wales We Want

As part of Mis Cwl Cymru, Cynnal Cymru brought their ‘The Wales We Want’ project to Gower College Swansea.

The Welsh Government funded project is aimed at getting young people to voice their opinions on the 'Wales they Want', information that will be fed into the Well-Being of Future Generations Bill.

Comedians Daniel Glyn and (former Gower College Swansea student) Ignacio Lopez visited the college and put on a special stand up gig followed by a discussion on The Wales We Want.

Singing workshops with Mark Llewelyn Evans

As part of the St David’s Day / Mis Cŵl Cymru celebrations at Gower College Swansea, baritone Mark Llewelyn Evans conducted music workshops with Performing Arts students, many of whom are keen to study music and acting at university.

Mark studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before attending the National Opera Studio. His performances include classical and popular songs, Rodgers & Hammerstein hits, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, film scores and Celtic ballads.

Energy Centre officially opened

GCS Training, the business training arm of Gower College Swansea, has officially opened a brand new Energy Centre at its new Hill House site.

Julie James, Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, was among the special guests at the launch event. The Minister was shown around the fully refurbished facilities and saw first-hand how the centre will deliver state-of-the-art training courses for the electrical, gas and plumbing trades.
