Gower College Swansea was proud to mark the recent ‘topping out’ of the new build at Gorseinon, a significant milestone in the redevelopment of the campus.
The College is working in partnership with Kier on the £20.6 million investment project, which is supported by Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.
When completed in 2026, the project will incorporate state-of-the-art science labs, refurbished classrooms and exam rooms upgraded to exam board standards. In addition there will be brand new spaces for our learners to socialise or utilise for work and enhanced learner support rooms which offer improved visibility and approachability.
Outside, upgrades to the coach bays and the introduction of a green shelter and walkway will enhance accessibility and promote sustainable travel for students and staff.
A ‘topping out’ is a symbolic ceremony held when a building's structural phase is complete, marking the moment the structure reaches its highest point.
“This redevelopment project reflects our commitment to sustainability, innovation and enhancing the student experience,” says CEO Kelly Fountain. “The new build has already been awarded a BREEAM Excellent rating for its environmental performance and sustainable design.
“We were delighted to invite our governors and special guests to the recent topping out ceremony, a significant milestone that’s a testament to the collaborative efforts of our teams, partners and stakeholders. We look forward to the next phase of development and the continued transformation of our campus.”
“The topping out is a significant milestone for this project and I would like to thank the College, the project team and our supply chain partners for their ongoing collaboration and the parts they have all played in reaching this stage,” says Ian Rees, Regional Director at Kier Construction Western & Wales.
“This project will have an important role in the transformation of the Gorseinon Campus and will leave a lasting legacy for generations of students to come, alongside having a positive impact on the wider local community. We are very proud to be a part of that story.”
