College welcomes Tree of Hope sapling

Gower College Swansea has officially welcomed the newest addition to its Green Hwb - a sapling grown from the seed of the legendary Sycamore Gap.

The College applied to have a sapling back in 2024 when the Trees of Hope initiative was first announced by the National Trust.

In total, almost 500 applications were received from around the UK for the 49 saplings (one to represent each foot in height that the Sycamore Gap was at the time of its felling).

“We were absolutely delighted when we found out we’d been awarded a Tree of Hope,” says the College’s Assistant Schools Manager, Kirsten Collins. “The staff and students from the Horticulture and Landscaping team are so looking forward to taking care of this very special sapling, which represents such hope and renewal.”

The sapling has been planted by Nikki Neale, Vice Principal for Curriculum, Quality, Teaching and Learning, in the grounds of the Green Hwb. Alongside staff and students, also in attendance were representatives from local schools, community groups, and organisations with whom the Green Hwb works closely throughout the year.
