ILS students celebrate work placement success

Independent Living Skills students at Gower College Swansea have celebrated the end of the academic year by enjoying a delicious buffet at the Vanilla Pod.

"The event was a roaring success and it was a great opportunity to say 'thank you' to the employers and volunteer groups who support the ILS department throughout the year," says Work Placement Coordinator Karen McDonald. "The buffet, which was prepared by catering and hospitality students, was delicious."

As part of the event, Cory Jones was presented with the Workplace Student of the Year award by Simon Lydiard, Operations Manager of the Parks department at Home Farm (City & County of Swansea).

"Cory is very deserving of this award," said Simon. "We can’t praise him enough for the commitment and hard work that he has demonstrated during his placement with us at Bishopston Sports Centre. His timekeeping and attendance have been exemplary and the staff at Bishopston have been very complimentary about his work ethic."

"Cory was always eager to assist in all our work processes and was always enthusiastic. During our school holiday programme, he volunteered to work extra days which enabled him to assist with football coaching which is one of his passions. We have enjoyed having him under our wing and wish him all the best for the future. He is a credit to Gower College Swansea."

Among the local employers and volunteer groups who attended were: Family Housing; Faaram Court Boarding Kennels and Cattery; Friends of the City of Swansea Botanical Complex; Swansea Grand Theatre; Sainsbury’s; Swansea University; B&Q; Cae Tan CSA, CHAPS and Coed-n-Fach.
