Shaping future leaders beyond the classroom

Thanks to a partnership with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), which offers a Degree in Fire and Rescue Leadership, students on the second year of the Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services course at Gower College Swansea were able to enjoy an action-packed day with the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS).

During the session at the Earlswood Training Centre, the students experienced elements of a trainee’s fitness test including the hose carry and the casualty drag. They also went inside the smoke house and learned more about what trainee firefighters experience when taking part in the rigorous entry tests.

The visit allowed students to experience the practical aspects of firefighting and emergency response. It helped them develop their understanding of emergency response procedures, teamwork, communication and the skills needed to work effectively in the uniformed services.

The students at Earlswood Training Centre are all part of the College’s Public Services Academy, which is run in partnership with UWTSD, the University of South Wales, South Wales Police and MAWWFRS.

“The partnerships we have formed through the Academy are incredibly valuable and have allowed our students to enjoy immersive learning experiences away from the classroom which, in turn, have inspired many of them to consider university as a viable option for the future,” says Rebecca Mugford, Sport and Public Services lecturer.

“As well as getting a glimpse into the life of a trainee firefighter, they get to investigate a whole range of activities and procedures such as stop and search, witness interviews, evidence gathering and battling cybercrime, all of which enables them to build essential skills for future employment.”
