Access to Health Science
Overview
Students study microbiology, chemistry, health care, psychology, research project, anatomy and physiology, as well as a radiography unit for those wishing to progress into radiography.
Key information
Applicants either need to complete a pre-access course or successfully complete an entry assessment.
You will be assessed throughout the course through a variety of assessment methods and will receive credits for each successfully completed unit. While Access courses do involve hard work, learners thoroughly enjoy developing their own interests and skills.
The course supports students through the UCAS application system for entry into higher education institutions throughout the UK and Northern Ireland. Progression to higher education to study audiology, radiography, paramedics, speech therapy, podiatry, cardiology or medical sciences. Many students gain employment directly from this programme, for example laboratory work or health care assistant role in local hospitals.
Students may be eligible for an Assembly Learning Grant (ALG) and college financial support for childcare and travel expenses.
Welsh Government Learning Grant to support learning
If you're aged 19 or over and studying an Access course at Gower College Swansea, you could receive financial support through the Welsh Government Learning Grant (FE) at the ‘part-time’ course rate (Access courses fall into the 275-499 hour funding bracket).
Eligibility guidelines
Age: Must be 19 or older.
Income: Means-tested – based on household income. Learners with income £18,370 or less may receive up to £959/year.
Residency: Available to eligible learners in Wales or elsewhere in the UK.
Use of funds: Helps with costs like books, equipment, and travel.
