Overview

You will study the play A Streetcar Named Desire, the autobiography Once in a House on Fire and an anthology of British poetry in year one. In year two you will study The Color Purple and King Lear. You will also complete a coursework project including your own creative writing.

Objectives:

  • To develop an enjoyment and interest in English literature through further study
  • To develop an understanding of the concepts and methods used for analysing and studying language
  • To develop linguistic and literary approaches in your reading and interpretation of texts
  • To explore contextual factors and how they influence the text being studied.

Outcomes:

  • You will have the ability to make an informed response to a wide range of texts
  • You will understand the contextual factors that influence a writer and reader
  • You will be able to complete an independent study of literary novels and complete your own creative piece.

Key information

  • A minimum of seven GCSEs grades A*-C
  • A Grade B in GCSE English Literature and English Language is essential.

Assessment will include timed assignments, presentations and a mock exam at Christmas.

At AS Level:

  • Unit 1 – Comparative Analysis and Creative Writing– exam
  • Unit 2 – Drama and Non-Literary Texts – exam

At A Level:

  • Unit 3 – Shakespeare– exam
  • Unit 4 – Unseen Texts and Prose Study – exam
  • Unit 5 – Critical and Creative Genre Study – Non-examined assessment.

Progression opportunities include university study and careers that require a high level of confidence in communicating either orally or through writing. These may include creative writing, journalism, advertising and communications or teaching.
