Overview

Ceramics is the craft of shaping clay into objects like bowls, mugs and sculptures. Using techniques like hand-building, decorating, and firing in a kiln, you turn soft clay into finished pieces that can stand the test of time.

This part-time course places a strong emphasis on traditional processes, offering a foundation in ceramic practices that have been used for centuries.

Ideal for both beginners and experienced ceramic artists. It is great for those eager to develop practical ceramic skills, explore creative expression through clay, or build on previous ceramic experience in a supportive, hands-on environment.

You’ll explore core construction techniques such as hand-building, slip casting, and throwing on the potter's wheel. Alongside these methods, you’ll experiment with surface decoration and glazing - from classic finishes to more experimental, contemporary styles. Firing techniques will also be introduced so you can fire your ceramic pieces and take them home.

What you’ll learn:

  • Key hand-building methods, including coiling, pinching, and slab construction
  • Introduction to slip casting and working with plaster molds
  • Basics of wheel-throwing for forming symmetrical vessels
  • Traditional and modern glazing and decorating techniques
  • Firing processes and kiln operation fundamentals.

Key information

No previous experience is necessary, just an interest in ceramics would be beneficial.

This course is delivered for 3 hours per week at our Llwyn y Bryn Campus, Uplands. During the course learners will create a range of ceramic test pieces and outcomes.

Learners are required to complete a booklet which will include photographs of the ceramic outcomes. This is assessed in order to certificate for the qualification. You will be based in our purpose-built ceramics studio fully equipped to support your learning experience.

Progression from any part-time course could offer a pathway to full-time courses in art and design. For adult learners considering a creative career, the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course could provide a progression route for this.

A studio fee of £10 is payable for each 10 week term to cover materials and firing.

All work can be collected on completion of booklet.
