Congratulations to the ILS football team!

Huge congratulations are in order to the Gower College Swansea Independent Living Skills football team who have won the 'Ability Counts' national championships at St George's Park, Burton on Trent.

After qualification from the regional competition, Gower College Swansea competed against 16 other colleges who had qualified from across England. Not only were students representing Gower College Swansea but also Wales!

The team played five matches, winning four and drawing one on their way to beating Henley College 4-2 in the final.

Chemistry students enjoy Swiss research trip

A Level Chemistry students from Gower College Swansea have recently returned from CERN in Geneva, which is the leading global establishment for research in particle physics.

Almost 50 students made the trip, which involved in depth lectures given by CERN's research workers and a tour of the facilities.

Software entrepreneur inspires IT students

Local software entrepreneur - and former Gower College Swansea student - Adam Curtis returned to the Gorseinon campus recently to deliver an inspirational talk to vocational IT students.

Adam is a software developer who created and now manages the Clockwork Bear agency in addition to founding Hoowla, an online conveyancing software for solicitors. He specialises in creating bespoke software for new start-ups and helping companies build systems to manage their business processes and documents online.

Seven Gower College Swansea students have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities this year.

Music enterprise event inspires performers

Aspiring singers and musicians from Gower College Swansea were recently invited to a special acoustic competition, organised by student enterprise interns Shazia Ali, Rhys Cozens and Curtis Cana and Enterprise Officer Lucy Turtle.

Big Ideas role model and music industry expert Gill Taylor was invited to the Gorseinon campus to judge the competition.

Times journalist coaches students on sports writing

Students at Gower College Swansea got to see a different side to the world of sport this week when they were visited by Times journalist Rick Broadbent.

During a two hour talk at the Tycoch campus, Rick - who also worked with Jessica Ennis-Hill on her 2012 autobiography - provided students with a writer's perspective on the sporting world including the kinds of events he covers as part of his day-to-day job and the people he has met throughout the course of his career.

Mock interviews strengthen skills for progression

Levels 2 and 3 Sport and Public Services students from Gower College Swansea's Tycoch campus recently attended mock interview sessions with local employers at an event organised by Lucy Turtle, the college's Enterprise Officer, and Gareth Price from Career Wales.

“This event was intended to help over 100 students gain employment or to succeed in higher education interviews," says Lucy. "It also addressed criteria set out in the ‘Career Planning' unit of the curriculum."

Industry professionals inspired by hair and beauty showcase

Gower College Swansea recently hosted an evening to celebrate and inspire Welsh talent across the hair and beauty sector.

The hair and make-up masterclass at Sketty Hall was attended by staff, students and local industry professionals who enjoyed practical demonstrations from salon director (and former student) Casey Coleman and Chris Howells, international make-up artist for Laura Mercier.

ESOL students enjoy a slice of Welsh history

As part of this year’s St David’s Day celebrations, the ABE and ESOL teams organised a joint educational trip for around 80 learners to St Fagans National History Museum.

With the weather on their side, the participants were able to explore the outdoor museum in its full glory, picnicking in the grounds of the wonderful Elizabethan manor house, as well as partaking in delicious freshly baked Welsh cakes at the Derwen Bake House.
