A record-breaking event for College athletics team

Members of Gower College Swansea’s athletics team took part in the recent Afan Nedd Tawe Athletics championships at Swansea University, where they competed against peers from Neath Port Talbot College and sixth forms in the Swansea/Neath area.

It was a successful day, with the GCS boys’ team winning the ‘senior boys’ category and the girls’ team taking second place in the ‘senior girls’ category.

There were a number of excellent performances throughout the day, but special mention must go to A Level students Tomos Slade (pictured) and Ieuan Hosgood for breaking the event records in the 110m hurdles and pole vault events.

The record for the 110m hurdle has stood since 1974 at 14.9 secs but, after an impressive run on the day, Tom was able to lower the time to an amazing 13.6 secs.

And despite conditions on the day not being ideal for pole vault, Ieuan was able to increase the old record which was set in 2002 from 4.20m to 4.30m.

“This was an outstanding effort by all the students,” says lecturer Marc Jones. “We are already looking forward to next year when, hopefully, the boys can retain the title and the girls can go one better and win it!”
