Students experience a flavour of the textile world

Updated 17/12/2015

A group of Art and Design students from Llwyn y Bryn were fortunate enough to recently visit the Melin Tregwynt woollen mill in a remote part of the Pembrokeshire coast. This visit was organised by Gower College Swansea's Bilingual Champion Anna Davies and Enterprise Officer Lucy Turtle.

The mill has been in the family of Amanda and Eifion Griffiths since 1912 and it employs over 30 people.

“This was a superb opportunity for students to meet Big Ideas Role Model Amanda Griffiths,” says Lucy. “Amanda showed them how the wool blankets they are most famously known for are created, from start to finish. Then Sophia, one of their designers, came and described that process to us in more detail, from creating new textile patterns to using ones from the archive.”

“Today the traditional Welsh designs are being transformed with colour and innovative design," adds Anna. "Their blankets can be seen in hotels worldwide - an excellent example of how a truly Welsh business has expanded their horizons globally, whilst staying true to their heritage.”
