New £4m redevelopment at Tycoch officially opens

A brand new £4 million redevelopment project at Gower College Swansea has been officially opened by Eluned Morgan AM, Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning.

The redevelopment, which has transformed the front of the Tycoch campus into a modern learning and social space, saw an investment of £1.5 million from the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme.

The ground floor boasts a new reception area, common room and retail coffee shop as well as student-centred offices such as admissions, funding and careers guidance.

Gower College Swansea has been shortlisted in three categories in top HR Awards

Gower College Swansea has been revealed as a finalist in three categories in the 2018 Wales HR Awards, which recognises and celebrates the achievements of HR professionals and employers across Wales.

Launched in 2017, the Awards ceremony is the flagship event of the Wales HR Network, a leading professional thought sharing and networking group created and run by Cardiff-based commercial law firm Darwin Gray and Acorn, Wales’ leading recruitment specialist.

Sector leading training facility launched

A new facility has been launched at Gower College Swansea that will offer a sector leading training environment for electricians working in hazardous conditions.

The Swansea CompEx Training Centre, the result of a collaboration between the College and C&P Engineering Services, has been funded by the Skills Priorities Programme supported by Welsh Government.

Employer event to focus on Swansea Bay City Deal and apprenticeships

Gower College Swansea is set to host a showcase business breakfast event where employers can find out more about the impact of the Swansea Bay City Deal.

The event, which coincides with Apprenticeship Week Wales 2018, will take place at the Liberty Stadium on 8 March.

The Swansea Bay City Deal is a £1.3bn investment secured by the Swansea Bay City Region for 11 major projects across Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. The City Deal includes funding from the UK and Welsh Governments, the public sector and the private sector.

A stunning performance from Cissy

Cissy, one of our current International students, delighted listeners at a recent National Waterfront Museum event to showcase Chinese culture and celebrate Chinese New Year.

The event, which was organised by the Chinese in Wales Association, attracted dignitaries and visitors from across the region.

Cissy plays the erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument, and was requested to play after being spotted at another event.

The performance was very well received and enjoyed by all.

College hosts Welsh Language Music Day

Gower College Swansea’s Gorseinon campus was full to the brim when it celebrated Welsh Language Music Day – a national day established to celebrate modern Welsh language music.

The BBC Wales Horizons project visited the College with a variety of new artists with Alasdair Gunneberg, Roughion, Eadyth, Hana2K and Marged playing the acoustic stage in the ground floor common room.  In addition, Connor Thomas, one of the College’s DJs, used a large boombox to play dance music outside the campus reception.

Generation O ready to take to the stage

Students on Gower College Swansea’s specialist one year acting course are ready to take to the stage this week under the direction of actor Richard Mylan.

A familiar face on national television, Richard’s credits include Waterloo Road, Casualty, Doctors, My Family, Bad Girls and Silent Witness. He also has numerous theatre credits to his name, including Starlight Express in London’s West End.

Jay Popham was named the winner of the recent regional heat of the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition which was held at the College’s Jubilee Court campus.
