Science students achieve prestigious Gold CREST Award

Two groups of A Level Science students from Gower College Swansea have received the highest level of award - the Gold CREST - from the British Science Association for their work with local companies.

One team of students worked with Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon and were given the task of incorporating recycled materials into a bio-block design while ensuring they were successful at colonising marine life.

The other team worked with Welsh Water and were tasked with designing and constructing a model of a chemical dosing rig with complete automatic control.

Role model encourages students to aspire

Entrepreneur and business mentor George Savva recently returned to Gower College Swansea to deliver an inspirational career workshop to Level 1 Art and Design students - a visit organised by the college's Enterprise Officer Lucy Turtle via the Welsh Government’s Big Ideas Role Model programme.

Hat trick for GCS students at Worldskills competition

Gower College Swansea students took the top three places at the recent Worldskills Industrial Electronics regional heat at the Tycoch campus.

In first place was Stefano Amoruso, followed by Matthew Sutch and Niko Leuchtenberg.

The students' results will now be scored against the other regions (including England and Ireland) and, if they make the top 12 in the country, they will represent Wales and the UK in the NEC national finals in November.

Health and Social Care students from Gower College Swansea's Tycoch campus recently attended mock interview sessions with local employers at an event organised by Lucy Turtle, the college's Enterprise Officer, and Gareth Price from Career Wales.

Practical skills pay off for Chemistry students

A team of AS Level Chemistry students from Gower College Swansea were recently named runners-up at a Royal Society of Chemistry practical competition held at Swansea University.

Miles Keller-Jenkins, Isabel Davies and Cerys McDowell, competing against nine other teams to perform a complex titration and use a UV/Vis spectrophotometer, were highly commended for the accuracy of their work.

"I was very impressed with their maturity and their ability to apply the skills they have learned at Gower College Swansea to a different practical scenario," says lecturer Richard Evans.

Students get involved with community agricultural project

ILS students at Gower College Swansea have enjoyed an exclusive opportunity to get involved at a new community based project in Ilston on the Gower.

Cae Tan is a community supported agriculture (CSA) initiative which aims to reinvigorate local sustainable food networks by rebuilding the relationships between consumer, farmer and land.

Students on the STTEP programme are taking part in green woodwork sessions and experiencing skills such as splitting oak, small animal care, fire lighting and beekeeping.

Congratulations to the ILS football team!

Huge congratulations are in order to the Gower College Swansea Independent Living Skills football team who have won the 'Ability Counts' national championships at St George's Park, Burton on Trent.

After qualification from the regional competition, Gower College Swansea competed against 16 other colleges who had qualified from across England. Not only were students representing Gower College Swansea but also Wales!

The team played five matches, winning four and drawing one on their way to beating Henley College 4-2 in the final.

Chemistry students enjoy Swiss research trip

A Level Chemistry students from Gower College Swansea have recently returned from CERN in Geneva, which is the leading global establishment for research in particle physics.

Almost 50 students made the trip, which involved in depth lectures given by CERN's research workers and a tour of the facilities.
